Tooth Extractions at Summer Hill Dental Group

person with dental painWhile we always endeavour to preserve and restore your natural teeth, there are times when a tooth may need to be removed because of wear, restorative needs, or to halt the spread of infection.

Here are some of the most common reasons for dental extractions:
  • Severe toothaches
  • Emergencies or trauma
  • Removing baby teeth to allow permanent teeth to grow through the gums
  • Poor wisdom tooth development
  • Full mouth rehabilitation
  • Creating extra room in the mouth for successful orthodontic treatments

What to Expect

We understand that you may be a bit nervous about having your tooth extracted. Rest assured that our knowledgeable and caring dentists at Summer Hill Dental Group are trained to ensure that you are comfortable before the procedure begins. That’s why before pulling the tooth, you will be given an injection of local anaesthetic to numb the area where the removal will take place.

For more challenging cases, we may use a general anesthetic that allows you to sleep through the procedure and prevent you from experiencing pain. When it comes time to extract the tooth, your dentist will remove any excess gum and bone tissue and use forceps to grasp the tooth and remove it.

The Recovery Process

Once your tooth has been pulled, it’s essential that you set aside a day or two to recover. Here are some tips to help decrease discomfort, minimise the risk of infection, and promote quicker healing:

  • After the extraction, bite down on the gauze pad placed by your dentist for 3-4 hours to permit blood to clot in the tooth socket
  • Place a bag of ice on the affected area 10 minutes at a time to decrease swelling
  • Take pain medication as prescribed
  • Restrict activity and be sure to rest for at least 24 hours following surgery
  • Refrain from forceful rinsing or spitting
  • Rinse with warm saltwater after a 24-hour period
  • Prop your head with pillows when lying down
  • Eat soft foods that are easy on your teeth
